Make Consequences of Bylaw Breaches Consequential

At present, the ramifications of breaching a bylaw are insufficient to ensure compliance. The consequences of a bylaw breach must be truly consequential. Peter proposes...

  • Provide enforcement team with better resources – technology, boats, remote access vehicles. If you can’t see it, you can’t prevent it

  • As a deterrent, fines for bylaw breaches seem to have become ineffective. Council needs to be creative in considering and adopting alternative mechanisms to encourage compliance with bylaws

  • Stronger remediation requirements - true restoration, monitored over sufficient time to determine success. You cannot replace the loss of a mature tree by simply planting an acorn

  • Hold Short Term Rental owners and agents responsible for bylaw breaches – agents to develop educational, monitoring, and immediate response capabilities. Profiting from the short-term rental of properties at the expense of the peaceful occupation of neighbouring properties must be prevented
